| A Healthy Start For Heacham School |
 If it is true that 'an apple a day keeps the doctor away', then the children at Heacham Infant School have a clean bill of health thanks to a new healthy eating initiative driven by Norfolk County Council and backed by local company, Williams Refrigeration.
As part of the Government's National School Fruit and Vegetable Scheme which has this term expanded into East Anglia region including Norfolk, all four to six year old children are now entitled to a free piece of fruit each day and pupils at Heacham Infant & Nursery School have been going bananas for the scheme. Williams is fully supportive of the initiative and has donated a free fridge to ensure fruit is kept cool and fresh and in perfect condition for consumption.
The company is fully supportive of the initiative and came up with a plan to see how they could help. The company's employees from Kings Lynn and Downham were asked to nominate local schools that would benefit from a free fridge. Heacham was the first school to be given a free fridge as part of this initiative.
Mrs. Belfield, Headmistress at Heacham Infant School, comments: "The scheme is an instant success and the arrival of the very smart top of the range fridge has meant all the fruit reaches the children in tip top condition. The fridge will be invaluable come the warm weather, mouldy or over ripe fruit is unattractive to the children who could be put off eating it in such a condition. With the arrival of the fridge this will never be a problem for the children at Heacham Infant and Nursery School."
Mr Tim Smith, Managing Director at Williams Regrigeration, comments: "We are delighted to help Heacham Infant School and we support Norfolk County Council in its attempts to promote healthy eating amongst children. It is wonderful that we can help encourage the children to enjoy fresh fruit and vegetables at School We know that many schools just do not have sufficient storage space to hold their fruit deliveries and in offering a refrigerator we hope this helps to keep the scheme very much alive for both the children and teachers. We had an amazing response when we asked our staff to nominate a school and we have plans to donate fridges to other schools in the area.
"There is now an onus on schools to provide fresh fruit on a daily basis there will be added pressure to ensure produce is stored in a healthy environment."
The School Fruit and Vegetable Scheme is a national programme that entitles children in LEA-maintained schools to a free piece of fruit or vegetable each school day. It is operated in Norfolk by the Healthy Norfolk Schools programme.
