| Williams Glycol Gives Wandsworth Prison The Environmental Solution |
Excerpt taken from the "All mod cons" feature written by Kelly Rose in Cost Sector Catering, June 2003 issue (with kind permission of Dewberry Boyes Ltd.)
Prison Consultant Tony Bannell has waited 11 years for a new kitchen at Wandsworth Prison.....The new kitchen which was due to open the third week of May, has seen a spend of more than £3 million which includes the demolition of the site's old boiler house costing £900,000.
"This new kitchen will really change the staff's lives" said Bannell. "I wouldn't work in the conditions they have had to work in. The new kitchen is fantastic. We have gone the extra mile here." "We have invested in the most up-to-date equipment we can buy. Everything is on wheels and is easy clean - even the sinks can be disconnected from the walls by pulling a lever." The kitchen's caapability means it could potentially cater for 2,500 a day. "You have got to have spare capacity."
Things have clearly been carefully thought through in the design of the new building. "Well I've had 11 years to think about how it's going to look, as that's how long I've been waiting for it," said Bannell. The 21st century unit combines the most up to date equipment with technology. All of the chillers run on glycol, so they are environmentally friendly and cost effective by running off one of two alternating motors. These are temperature monitored every 15 minutes to a computer, thus saving on time.
The Glycol Refrigeration System was installed at Wandsworth Prison by Williams contracting unit, Williams Southern along with a number of coldrooms and cabinets including a reach-in blast chiller and overnight thaw cabinet, working closely with the main site contractor Keir Southern.
