Healthy Outlook For Williams Refrigeration At The Royal Infirmary Of Edinburgh
Williams Refrigeration - part of Aga Foodservice Equipment (AFE) - has supplied a comprehensive solution, worth more than £600K, for the new Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh to meet a range of demanding temperature controlled storage requirements across kitchen, laboratory and teaching areas.

Expected to be one of Europe's most modern hospitals when fully operational this May, the Royal Infirmary is located on a Greenfield site three miles south of the city centre. Williams Scotland the company's contracting division for the region worked closely with the Consort Healthcare (Edinburgh) - the consortium with overall responsibility for the PFI project - to identify and fulfil the hospital's refrigeration requirements.
Crucially, the new hospital allows staff to leave the limitations of the previous Victorian buildings. The purpose-built kitchen area, for example, features five Williams' modular coldrooms and one freezer room. The hospital has employed a facility off-site for food production, with meals supplied as frozen to the Infirmary and then safely stored in the Williams cold/freezer rooms, before being regenerated as part of a cook-freeze process. The rooms will also hold fresh vegetables - an essential part of the patients' menu - and support the hospital's small special dietary kitchen. Williams' compact Pearl cabinets have been selected to offer convenient refrigeration on the hospital's wards.

As well as the catering element of the project, Williams Scotland has also project managed the installation and commissioning of 26 temperature controlled rooms for laboratory use - 13 in the hospital in key areas including, haematology, pathology and two blood storage rooms, in this case having to operate at a constant 37°C. The other 13 laboratory rooms are located in the teaching block. Additional areas installed by Williams Scotland include a 54-body mortuary and air conditioning for the hospital's advanced MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) suite.

Says Ken Robertson, Director at Williams Scotland: "We are delighted to have played such a key role, through our dedicated team here at Williams Scotland, in this prestigious project. The comprehensive range of refrigeration solutions we have been able to supply to a tight deadline, certainly underlines the strength of our product offering, design, manufacture as well as technical and project management capabilities at Williams, as well of course as our successful track record in the public sector."
